Example text

Living organisms, including humans, have shown changes in their anatomy which reflect their evolutionary history. For example, today humans have larger brains and smaller teeth than they did 2 million years ago. Some anatomical features, such as brain size, gradually changed over millions of years; others have changed over shorter intervals of time. For example, human teeth are smaller today than they were only 5,000 years ago. The principles of modern evolutionary theory have withstood years of scrutiny and scientific challenges.

Darwin noticed that several species differed slightly from island to island, even though the islands were only fifty to sixty miles apart. Most striking were the anatomical differences he noticed among finches. On one island they had strong, thick beaks for cracking nuts and seeds; on another island, they had smaller beaks for catching insects, and on another their beak was long and thin for feeding on flowers and fruit. Each species of finches had adapted in a manner that made them better able to survive in their own specific environment.

For example, one can argue, based on the fossil record and our knowledge of evolution, that humans existed at the same time as dinosaurs. To confirm this hypothesis, all that is needed is conclusive evidence of fossil humans and dinosaurs sharing the same habitat at the same time. However, the possibility also exists that the hypothesis can be rejected. After years of looking for human remains associated with dinosaurs, we have found no evidence to support their association, and the hypothesis can be unquestionably rejected.
